Plant spacing calculator
Enter the spacing a crop needs and the size of your bed. This gives you the plant count for a standard square grid and for offset triangular spacing — which fits up to 15% more into the same area, though small beds gain less because of edge losses.
Square grid: plants across = bed width ÷ spacing, plants down = bed length ÷ spacing, multiply the two (rounding each down).
Triangular: rows sit at 0.866 × spacing apart instead of a full spacing, and alternate rows are offset by half a spacing. You fit more rows into the same length — up to 15% more plants over a large area, though offset rows lose one plant each at the bed edge, so a small bed gains less. The calculator shows the real figure for your dimensions.
Why triangular spacing fits more
In a square grid each plant sits at the corner of a square, so the diagonal neighbours are further away than they need to be — that diagonal space is wasted. Offsetting every second row puts each plant in the gap between two plants in the row before it, forming equilateral triangles. Every neighbour is now exactly the intended distance away, and none of the space is doing nothing.
The row spacing works out as spacing × √3/2, or 0.866 × spacing. At 6-inch plant spacing the rows sit 5.2 inches apart rather than 6, so you fit more rows into the same bed length.
Why your bed won't gain the full 15%
The 15.5% figure is the density gain across an infinite field. In a real bed, every offset row is shifted half a spacing sideways, which pushes its last plant past the edge — so offset rows hold one plant fewer than the rows they sit between. In a 4 × 8 foot bed at 6-inch spacing that works out at 135 plants triangular against 128 square: a real gain, but nearer 5% than 15%. The larger the bed relative to the spacing, the closer you get to the theoretical figure. The calculator above shows the gain for your dimensions rather than the textbook one.
When not to offset: if you need to walk or kneel between rows, keep the square grid — the tidy aisles are worth more than the extra plants. Triangular spacing suits beds you reach into from the edges, which is most raised beds under four feet wide.
Spacing on the seed packet is two different numbers
Packets usually give in-row spacing and a much wider row spacing — carrots at "3 inches apart, rows 12 inches apart", say. The 12 inches is for your feet, not the carrots. In a raised bed you work from the edges, so you can use 3 inches in both directions and fit 16 per square foot instead of four. That single realisation is most of what square foot gardening is.

Where spacing charts mislead
They assume good soil
Intensive spacing only works if fertility and water keep up. In a raised bed with a rich mix it is fine. In poor ground, packed plants simply compete and every one of them does worse.
They assume the plant behaves
Spacing figures describe a well-grown specimen. A courgette in a hot summer with plenty of feed will exceed its allocation cheerfully, and a bolted lettuce takes up nothing at all.
They ignore what's next door

What is triangular plant spacing and is it better?
Triangular or offset spacing staggers every second row so each plant sits in the gap between two plants in the row before it, forming equilateral triangles instead of squares. Row spacing becomes 0.866 times the plant spacing, which raises density by about 15% across a large area. In a small raised bed the real gain is smaller — around 5% in a 4x8 foot bed at 6-inch spacing — because each offset row loses a plant at the edge. It suits beds you tend from the edges, and is a poor choice for anything you need to walk between.
How the app handles spacingDoes plant spacing on the seed packet mean between plants or between rows?
Seed packets normally give two figures: plant spacing within the row and a wider row spacing. The wider figure exists so a person or a tractor can walk between rows, not because the plant needs it. In a raised bed you tend from the edges, so you can use the in-row spacing in both directions — which is the reason intensive beds fit so much more than a row garden of the same area.
